Onyx Storm
By: Rebbeca Yarros
Official Synopsis:
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty. Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.
Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.
Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything. They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth. But a storm is coming...and not everyone can survive its wrath.
My Review:
This book was definitely something. Through traveling across the isles and defending themselves from the venin, these characters had an adventure. This story feels more like a filler book for the series. The majority of scenes were confusing and felt unneeded. While trying to defend themselves, Violet and her friends searched for a cure for Xaden and find the irids.
This installment in the series did a good job of keeping me interested and invested; however, I feel like it was unneeded. I understand that this series is supposed to be five books long, but it really could have ended with this one. This story had a similar ending or storyline to Iron Flame, the second book in the Empreyhan series. I feel like I am left on the same cliffhanger as a year ago. While this book was not my favorite, it still had some things I loved. I really enjoyed getting to spend more time with other characters, such as Aaric and Sloane. They were only in the book for a little bit, but it made a big impact. As always, I loved Violet and Xaden’s relationship. Everytime they talk it makes me so excited! This story, while a filler book, still kept me entertained and was very enjoyable.
I feel like the last hundred pages needs a paragraph of its own. This ending surprised me in many ways and left me a tad confused. I enjoyed the storytelling and the beautiful writing. Having everyone’s POV’s, was so exciting and I enjoyed seeing how the other characters think. I could not put the book down! I do have to say that I went through all the emotions throughout this last part. I cried, laughed, screamed, and ultimately was left confused.
SPOILER ALERT:
When I say that I cried, I bawled when Quinn died! She was such a fun character to have in the series and seeing her and Imogen’s relationship grow was amazing. My favorite line in the book were her last words, considering the context from when they first met.
SPOILER OVER:
Overall, this book kept me invested in the series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved finding out more about the isles and the characters. Of course, I fell in love again with Xaden (who couldn’t??)! I would rate this book a three out of five stars because of its entertaining plot; however, at times I felt it was a little unneeded.
